Throughout my senior year of undergraduate school, I interned at Lexington Community Radio (LCR), which founded WLXL-LP 95.7FM El Pulso Latino and WLXU-LP 93.9FM. Lexington Community Radio is a nonprofit and non-commercial organization that is driven by and for the local community. Community support and volunteers are very important to the operation of LCR because it is a nonprofit organization with only three full-time employees. What many people might not know is, 95.7FM El Pulso Latino and WLXU 93.9FM are Lexington’s only two Low Power FM stations; each station is unique in that it all the shows are created and run by community volunteers. Through these two stations, Lexington Community Radio serves to empower community voices and promote community service-related projects that help Lexington’s people.
